Spin cycle--Morals

Jen picked the topic of morals for this week's spin cycle.  Geez, go for the sticky topic, Jen.
So morals.  In today's world, does it seem like morals are maybe a bit lacking?  There's always someone else to blame, it's somebody else's fault, and no one takes responsibility for anything.
In our house we are trying to raise boys that will take responsibility.  Own up to their mistakes, and their actions.  And live with the consequences.  It's not easy.
The easy way would to let them become selfish, self serving little monsters.  But then I couldn't stand to be around them. So we are teaching the morals we appreciate to them:
  • treat others as you would want to be treated
  • treat things that aren't yours better than you treat your own stuff
  • tell the truth
  • take the consequences with grace
  • do what you say you will
  • be courteous
Mostly we are trying to teach them not to be little heathens.  It is an interesting process.  Bruiser still hasn't totally caught on to the whole saying please thing.  If he wants something he asks for demands it.  If we tell him to ask nicely, he will say Nicely? I can have it?  Not quite what we were going for.
I guess all we can hope for is that when they are not around us that they act like presentable children.  I know I was always relieved when I heard from teachers and other mothers that Turbo was a good kid.  Something must be sinking in.
Not much of a spin, but there you have it.  Go see Jen at Sprite's Keeper for more spins on morals.

  1. Good morning!
It's been awhile, hasn't it? Hope you've been doing well! I couldn't agree with you more! I definitely feel that morals in today's society are lacking BIG TIME. I think you see it in schools now more than ever before and it's so disturbing. People just want to turn the other cheek, rather than address the issues at hand...so sad!

  2. Yay, I can comment!
We are also trying to teach Sprite good morals. It's a hit and miss with her often. She'll remember her manners when she really wants something and feels like she needs to lay on the sugar to get it, but when it comes to every day things, I usually have to remind her.
    You're linked!

  3. I was always so grateful to have the "good kids" with excellent company manners though they routinely bashed each other. ;) The girls friends parents and teachers were always saying they hoped the girls rubbed off on the others etc.

With Ian- well, we've got a ways to go doesn't help that Ki shares custody with people who don't think please and thank you are necessary and routinely let him do whatever he wants so they don't have to deal with him.

Ah well, he's young yet and he uses them most of the time- that's something I guess.

  4. We are in the same boat trying to teach morals in a world where it seems they have been forgotten. So it makes it difficult when Leo sees older people doing much worse than we are trying to teach him.
