Pour Your Heart Out-Relief

Today I'm joining Shell's Pour Your Heart Out Wednesday again.

When we decided to get pregnant we weren't hoping for a boy or a girl--just healthy.  When we went in to the first ultrasound we decided to find out the sex.  We were blessed with a little boy.  I was glad to hear that.  If they made a mistake we could still use some of the clothes.  We got our healthy boy and things were good.

Five years later--after some minor detours--we got pregnant with number two.  Both the grandmothers were actively hoping for a girl.  I must confess, I was not.  I really wanted another boy.  For one thing we had all the clothes we would need, all the toys, all the stuff for a boy.  For another, I was scared to raise a girl in today's world.  I had enough trouble with the drama when I was growing up and I did not want to watch a girl try to navigate that world again.  Boys don't have it easy but it's different for boys.

Both my husband and I were relieved when the technician said number two was most definately a boy.  Nick because he would not have to try to deal with a dating girl, me because boys just seemed like less drama.  Also, I have a hard time being girly and I didn't thinnk that I would be so good at trying to teach a girl how to do her hair and use makeup and all that stuff.

Mostly though, because my memories of middle school and high school are not so great, I was relieved that we would be guiding boys through that mine field instead of girls.  Boys have bullies to deal with, but girls have all the catty, mean, drama laden things to try and navigate.  I know I'm probably a better mother to boys than I would be for a girl.  Although I miss getting to dress up a girl, just a little.

  2. With my first two, I could care less boy or girl. I can't say the same for the second two. I WANTED BOYS, but God had another plan and # 3 was a girl (wouldn't trade her for anything, even though she is destined to be a btw her three brothers and my lack of girlishness). I ended up with 3 boys and a girl. They only one I knew the sex before birth was number four.

  3. Oh, I totally agree! Now, if I had had a girl, I'm sure I would have loved having a girl...but since I only have boys, I can focus on all the boy stuff and praise God that I will not have to deal with the middle school drama!

    Thanks for linking up!

  5. I think every family winds up with exactly the right kids. That said, I'm also glad to have two boys. I wouldn't mind if our next were a girl, but I'd be just thrilled to have a third boy.

  6. I understand completely. I always wanted to have a girl, but when I had my son, I realized that I'm a much better boy mom. I really believe that with a girl I'd have tried to recreate my childhood, and would have ended up disappointed if she wasn't just like me! With a boy, it's a clean slate. No expectations. And...boys are fun!

  7. I thought I wanted a girl. But THANK GOD I didn't! I'm better at trucks, sand, dirt than lipstick. YEAH boys!

  8. I wanted a girl, I got a girl. When we go through it again, (my words to the big man's ears) I will want another girl. I KNOW girls. And the penis thing unnerves me a bit. :-)

  9. I'm with Jen - I wanted a girl, I got a girl. But I knew that my miracle was going to be a one-time thing, so having a girl - for me - was perfect. They are challenging, though, and I'm certainly not looking forward to the tween and teen years, and dreading the dating years. Still searching for that 'pause' button! ;)

  10. I'll admit that I wanted one of each. Now that little o is here, though, I enjoy watching the boys grow up as brothers. Because they're so close in age, I'm hoping they'll be good friends.

If we try again, I'm still going to wish for a girl, though. I would have liked little dresses and piggy tails. And all the teenage drama? I think I might have liked that, too.

  11. Mom of three boys here. We didn't care what gender they'd be and didn't want to find out until their birth day. My motto is, "If you have three, it is easiest if they are all the same gender". I barely have to buy clothes or sports equipment for the youngest boy as we have it all. My husband is friends with his 3 brothers as adults and it helps to remember that as sometimes the oldest at 13.5 really bugs the 12 yr old.

  12. When we were having our second my hubby was sweating it out and really though it was a girl. He was so nervous because he said he would be the VERY overprotective dad...you know the one that sits on the porch with a shot gun in hand. Yeah that would of been him. But luckily we had another boy. I always wanted a girl, but my boys are my life! And I think God was doing me a favor and gave me two boys in fear of how crazy my hubby would of been!
